Andrea Peto Named Member of Royal Irish Academy’s Independent Review Panel

We are happy to announce that our Research Affiliate Andrea Peto has been named as a member of the Independent Review Panel of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA).

The RIA is Ireland’s leading body of experts in the sciences and humanities. In March its President, Mary Canning announced an independent review of the RIA’s Membership process, after expressing concerns that the Academy had not achieved greater diversity in a new membership group. She initiated an independent review of the membership criteria and processes to ensure that they meet international best practice in ensuring appropriate balance in the diversity of its new members.

The panel’s members are:

  • Lesley Yellowlees (Chair), former Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and former Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh;
  • Veronica van Heyningen, geneticist and Honorary Professor at UCL, Fellow of the Royal Society and chair of their Diversity Committee;
  • Knut Liestøl, Professor of Informatics at the University of Oslo, Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and Chair of the Expert Panel for BALANSE – the gender initiative of the Norwegian Research Council;
  • Andrea Peto, Professor of Gender Studies at Central European University, Research Affiliate of the CEU Democracy Institute, and Doctor of Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The review panel will engage in a series of consultations, and will conduct a survey before publishing its report and recommendations in December 2021.
