Balint Madlovics: From State Socialism to Post-Communist Capitalism. Critical Perspectives

“Even for those not specializing in the region, the book is worth reading from a methodological perspective,” our Junior Research Fellow Balint Madlovics writes in his review on Ivan Szelenyi’s book in Europe-Asia Studies.

“Even for those not specializing in the region, the book is worth reading from a methodological perspective. In each chapter, a socio-economic setting is put on the ‘operating table’ of a Weberian sociologist, who ‘dissects’ them, layer by layer, with analytical precision,” he argues, adding that “Szelenyi’s taste for theory-building and developing new research by ‘continuing the story’ of previous findings is evident in his investigations of the transition process.”

“My main criticism of this book is the lack of careful editing that these studies deserve,” he concludes.
