Beata Bako on How Hungary Might Avoid the Suspension of EU Funds

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban “has won favor with other member states grateful to him for the pipeline exemption,” our Research Affiliate Beata Bako writes in her op-ed on Balkan Insight.

“It is odds-on that his government will continue to use this power of its veto to reduce or eventually eliminate the effects of the conditionality mechanism and end the delay in the payouts from the coronavirus recovery fund,” she argues, adding that “this strategy might be labelled as “unethical”, but in fact it is simply politics, where blackmail (or, bargaining, if you like) is a commonly accepted method.”
