DI Mourns the Passing of Julia Szalai

The CEU community is deeply saddened by the death of Julia Szalai who taught and mentored generations of master and doctoral students, and young faculty, and generously co-constructed knowledge with scholars of different fields and departments throughout more than two decades.

Julia Szalai was a dedicated faculty member of the Nationalism Studies Program, the Department of Political Sciences, and the Romani Studies Program for a number of years. As a Senior Research Fellow, she collaborated with the Center for Policy Studies for almost two decades, and most recently she has been Research Affiliate at the CEU Democracy Institute. She was a champion in paving the road to CEU’s current international standing in research, teaching, and advocacy for Roma equality.

In her teaching and research work, Julia Szalai studied intersecting inequalities of class, race/ethnicity, and gender in multiethnic societies across Europe with a closer focus on poverty and social exclusion in the post-socialist societies of Central and Eastern Europe. Her recent studies addressed issues of structural transformations in the post-socialist welfare states and the exclusionary mechanisms of public education across Europe.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Julia’s family during this difficult time.

We will remember her always for her academic brilliance, moral unassailability, and warm collegiality.
