Opening: Post-doctoral Researcher - REAL DEAL project

We invite applications for a one-year part-time or full-time Postdoctoral Researcher position within the framework of the EU Horizon 2020 research project REAL DEAL (Reshaping European Advances towards Green Leadership Through Deliberative Approaches and Learning). The CEU team is led by Senior Research Fellow Stephen Stec.

 

The REAL DEAL project

The project aims at stimulating a pan-European debate to reshape citizens’ and stakeholders’ active participation through deliberative processes around the European Green Deal. It brings together researchers and practitioners of deliberative democracy from a wide range of disciplines including environmental rights and the law of public participation, ethics and responsible innovation, gender studies and ecofeminism, psychology, geography, urban planning and sustainability studies. It includes the EU’s largest civil society networks advocating on the environment, climate, sustainable development, local democracy and the European movement. It teams up with youth climate, social justice and women’s organizations, SMEs, universities and research institutes, mobilizing networks with thousands of CSOs, uniting millions of citizens and activating contacts to thousands of policymakers. In a large co-creation exercise, REAL DEAL will develop, test and validate innovative tools and formats to propel deliberative democracy to the next level. It will test its innovations at citizens assemblies for the transition in at least 13 countries.

 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will carry out empirical research within the terms of the project grant agreement under the supervision of the CEU team lead researcher.

CEU is leading on tasks related to the development of a Protocol (guidance and toolkit) on citizen engagement in relation to the European Green Deal and in laying the groundwork for the programmatic aspects of the Citizen Deliberation Academy, an institution that will carry forward the results of the REAL DEAL Project following its completion. The work under the project is expected to result in 1-2 publications in open access, peer-reviewed journals.

 

Qualifications

We seek applicants with a record (or strong promise) of relevant and internationally recognized publications in the research area, familiarity with current political affairs. Candidates must have excellent written and oral proficiency in English and a PhD in hand (at the start of their employment) in the field of Public Policy, Citizen Participation, Law, Political Science, Sociology, Economics, or related fields.

The focus of the REAL DEAL Project is on the European Union and the European Neighborhood countries, we would be pleased to receive candidacies by scholars from this area. In the spirit of theoretical and methodological pluralism, we are open to quantitative as well as qualitative approaches.

 

What we offer

We offer a one-year appointment (employment contract for 12 months, with a possibility of extension) based in the Budapest site of CEU with a competitive compensation package, as well as a dynamic and international academic environment.
