Renata Uitz on Illiberal Christian Democracy

The Hungarian government opened the fall political season in an eventful way, our Research Affiliate Renata Uitz writes in her op-ed published in Hungarian weekly Magyar Narancs.

She writes about Pope Francis’ mass at the International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest, and also about the visit of Polish President Andrzej Duda, mentioning that the Hungarian government even issued a decree stating that the “European Commission (EC) intervened into the sovereignty of a Member State.”

But, Renata Uitz writes, while it is new that the EC actually initiated a fine at the European Court of Justice, it is not at all unlawful or surprising. This is a signal from the EC that the Polish government should respect the court’s decisions.
