Zsolt Enyedi on Academic Freedom in Hungary

The new legislation that sets up foundations to manage universities in Hungary “is one more step to control the entire society and to make sure that even if Fidesz loses the elections, it will continue to have power,” Zsolt Enyedi, Lead Researcher of our De-/Re-Democratization Workgroup said to Spanish daily El Pais.

The article covers the new bill according to which most universities have to accept the new model. The government says that these foundations will manage the institutions “more efficiently.” The government will appoint the boards to run these foundations, which will also control real estate assets of the institutions.
