The Open Society University Network (OSUN), a new global consortium of educational institutions led by CEU and Bard College that integrates learning and the advancement of knowledge across geographic and demographic boundaries, promotes civic engagement on behalf of open societies, and expands access to higher education for underserved communities.
OSUN counts over 40 partner institutions from Berlin to Bishkek, Dhaka to Bogota, and some of the world’s most prestigious organizations from the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs to the Institut fur die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, among its members.
The CEU Democracy Institute plans teaching, research, and training activities with OSUN partners, from the exchange of scholars to developing and teaching short courses on democracy and democratization for faculty.
The fellowships provide an opportunity for up to 8 doctoral students and 6 junior scholars within 7 years of their PhD defense to spend between 4 and 12 months in Budapest at the CEU Democracy Institute or the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives.

Debates on the state of democracy in EU Member States have been intensifying. In a debate organized by the CEU Democracy Institute, chaired by Dimitry Kochenov and moderated by R. Daniel Kelemen, Vera Jourova, Clement Beaune and Michal Simecka addressed the question how to strengthen democracy at the national level.
The Rule of Law Conditionality Mechanism of the European Union is aimed at sanctioning rule of law violations. But can it fulfill its purpose? Didier Reynders, EU Commissioner for Justice, MEP Katalin Cseh and Professor Laurent Pech discussed how the mechanism will function in practice.
