Kate Coyer

Kate is a senior research fellow with the Democracy Institute and visiting professor in the Department of Public Policy. Her research concerns the intersection of media, technology, and social change, especially the impact of digital platforms on politics and participation. Her work examines the spread of extremism and disinformation online, and movements to enhance human rights and promote communication access and community-based media. She received her PhD from Goldsmiths College, University of London and has held fellowships with the Berkman Klein Center, Harvard University, and the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. Kate is a member of the Real Facebook Oversight Board, the editorial board of the Journal of Alternative Media and Communication, and the experts group of the Community Media Forum Europe. She has appeared in or on: Boston Globe, NPR, BBC, Wired, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, New Scientist, among others.
